Read this book!
Gary S. Becker and Kevin M. Murphy explore the market behavior in a social environment most magnificiently in this book. The insight that I have gained through reading this book cannot be measured by a mere mortal. Furthermore, it astounds me that the sales rank for this book is 72,711, when on my bookshelf it is number 1! This is a must buy for anyone, even if you have no prior knowledge of economics.

Soil Nutrient Bioavailability : A Mechanistic Approach
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (March, 1995)
Author: Stanley A. Barber
Average review score:

Excellent Scientific Piece
It is refreshing to read work with content and information that is useful for those interested in going beyond the surface. Anyone who has taken the time to study this in depth should be complimented. Since nutrition has a major impact on our health and economy I think we all need to pay more attention to what is happening in the food chain. Thank you.

Solar System Dynamics
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (June, 2000)
Authors: Carl D. Murray and Stanley F. Dermott
Average review score:

Authoritative, Fascinating, Challenging
Three books on our solar system appeared in the past year or so. Each has its own "flavor." I will review them in turn, but browsers should be aware of the others, so they are listed here: See also, "The New Solar System," J. Kelly Beatty, Carolyn Collins Petersen, Andrew Chalkin, and "The Planetary Scientist's Companion," Katharine Lodders and Bruce Fegley, Jr.

If one of the other books, "The New Solar System" is lacking in mathematics, this volume more than makes up for it. Although my current interest, the Titius/Bode Law, is given only one page of description, it is a full and fair assessment of this astronomical curiosity. The authors immediately follow this on p. 9 by a statement that sums up the flavor of the rest of the book: "...It is Newton's laws that are at work and the subtle gravitational effect that determines the dynamical structure of our solar system is the phenomenon of 'resonance'." Planets do not circle the sun independently, they influence each other's orbits in fascinating and subtle ways, some of which may take billions of years to evolve.

The manifold aspects of "resonance" can be seen in the Chapter headings: The Two-Body Problem, The Restricted Three-Body Problem, Tides, Rotation, and Shape, Spin-Orbit Coupling, The Disturbing Function, Secular Perturbations, Resonant Perturbations, Chaos and Long-Term Evolution, and Planetary Rings.

The mathematics appears to be straightforward, but like most perturbation theory, it is not simple. Calculus is essential, of course. However, I welcome it. It will challenge my curiosity and ability for many years to come.

This is a compelling, must-have book for the advanced student of the science underlying our solar system and probably of other planetary systems as well.

Spanish/English Contrasts: An Introduction to Spanish Linguistics (Romance Languages and Linguistics Series)
Published in Hardcover by Georgetown University Press (June, 1987)
Author: Melvin Stanley Whitley
Average review score:

A Linguistic Must
This is a wonderful book for the intermediate linguistics student. Though it does start at a basic level, it does jump rather quickly into a more difficult areas. The multiple charts and other illustrations make it especially useful to those who have to "see it" and not just read an explanation. I would definitely recommend this text to anyone interested in linguistics.

The Specialty of the House
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1956)
Author: Stanley Ellin
Average review score:

THE PERFECT SHORT STORY
It's scandalous that any of Stanley Ellin is out of print, but "The Specialty of the House" should always be in print somewhere. As big a fan as I am of John Collier, Roald Dahl and Saki, no single story of any of them can match Ellin's (first!) story. There is not a word that could be added to improve it, nor one that could be removed without diminishing it. In the thirty five years that have passed since I first read it, I doubt that six months have passed without my rereading it, and I find new pleasures each time. And the rest of Ellin is only a notch below this story (personal favorites - "Kindly Dig Your Grave, "The Last Bottle in the World", and "The Blessington Method"). If you've never read Ellin, do yourself a favor and try to find any of his story collections.

Spectrochemical Analysis
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (11 March, 1988)

Average review score:

A classic reference
Ingle and Crouch have done a wonderful job in putting together a true reference text. This is a must have text for analytical chemists who need to have a concise treatment of spectrochemical analysis. They have done a wonderful job in intergrating theory with practice for a wide variety of analytical techniques. This book was indespensible as a graduate student in the late 80's and still comes in handy today!
